Illustrator won't open

I recently installed Illustrator 2022 on my iMac (running Big Sur); it crashed when I was tring to create a gradient. When I restarted, it would get to the message asking me if I wanted to recover files, I clicked yes, and then it hangs. Tried opening without asking for file recovery and it hangs when I try to start a new file. Tried restarting, uninstalling that version, reinstalling--same problem. Tried using the Illustrator 2021 version. Same problem. I am NOT getting any messages about plug-in problems.

Any ideas?
