Hello @Alessandro24751029r69n,
We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. We are here to help and would like to suggest trying to reset Illustrator's preferences manually and checking if it helps:
For macOS
• Close all Adobe applications.
• Go to the following locations
• ~/Library/Caches
• ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
• ~/Library/Preferences
• Rename Adobe Illustrator, com.adobe.illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old, com.adobe.illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings.old
• Launch Illustrator from the Creative Cloud.
Note: Location starting with this "~" sign indicates the User Library, which is hidden. So, you need to copy & paste the exact path in spotlight search or from Finder Menu > Go > Go to Folder > Paste the location in the dialog box like this:
For Windows
- Close all Adobe applications.
- Go to Location C:\Users\%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe
- Rename Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Illustrator 27 Settings folders to Adobe Illustrator.old and Adobe Illustrator - 27 Settings.old
- Relaunch Illustrator from Creative Cloud
Disclaimer: Please note that renaming preferences folders will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also save a backup of the folders in case you want to. The location is mentioned above.
Also, kindly ensure to install the latest OS/Illustrator updates. We appreciate your time and effort in helping us resolve this issue.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Anubhav

I'm having same problem, just repurchased AI and in most recent version. I cannot get a simple image to trace.
I tried renaming AI in settings. Any more ideas? I only purchased to redo a logo.

Hello, I am having the same issue. Please advise.
I have uploaded a screenshot with the error. The error occurs as soon as I try to open my file.
I have tried older versions, uninstalling and re-installing, restarting my computer, and troubleshooting your advice on this forum and I'm still having the issue.

What kind of file is it? Does that happen with all files? Where is it saved? If on a server, move it to the desktop and try again.

Thank you for your response, Monika! ♥
The file is .ai and it seems to only happen with that one particular file (as of now). I opened some other .ai projects and did not get the error. I wonder if maybe the file I'm using is corrupt.
I'm working off of an external drive.
I think I'll start a new project and recreate the logo again. It didn't take me long (since it's so simple).
Thank you again for your help! 🙂

Glad you can recreate it easily.
Hopefully this doesn't happen to you again. What you can try in such cases: Disable fonts you have used (they can go corrupt) so Illustrator can't find them. Move placed images to other folders, so they can't be found (they might also be corrupt. Then when you can finally open something, copy the leftovers to a new file.

Hello @Alessandro24751029r69n,
I hope the problem is resolved by now. If not, kindly share a sample file (https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/share-your-files-in-6-simple-steps/td-p/12967...), so we can investigate this further and provide the appropriate solution.
Looking forward to your response.

The image is long horizontal with lots of white.
It takes a while but traces here without an error.
It traces much faster when you first crop away most of the white empty area.

I am also having this problem. I have an entire computer lab (32 iMacs) running the exact same specs, yet the problem is only happening on a couple of the computers. They are all set up the same.
macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7
iMac (21.5-inch, 2017)
16 GB 2133 MHz DDR4
Graphics Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536 MB
Illustrator Version 27.3.1
It doesn't matter what type of image I try, I've tried many. They all come up with the same error on just a few machines.
"An unknown error occured." click for more info. When I click on more info, it takes me to a "Fix Illustrator crash Issues"
It didn't crash, it is just that it won't complete this particular function - Image Tracing
I have also uninstalled and reinstalled on the machine having issues. It still didn't work.
I hope something can be figure out soon.

Update: I uninstalled Illustrator 2023 on the machine that was having problems, and reloaded the earlier 2022 version 26.5.3. Image tracing now works again. Out of the 32 iMacs in my classroom, only some of them have issues image tracing in Illustrator 2023. I wish I knew what is causing the problems on these specific machines, but I haven't been able to figure it out.
For now, I'll leave 2022 installed.

I am having the same issue, but not on all images.
Rasterizing the image in Illustrator seems to be a workaround, but I cannot figure out what the difference in the two files might be.
