Inaccurate Object Selection. Tolerance bug?

Hello! I'm having trouble selecting smaller shapes. I have a big monitor, so I can see the artwork in detail. However, when I correctly position the direct selection tool over an object, Illustrator will pick a different object that is not indicated by the tool. This is super annoying and I have to zoom in an unnecessary amount to get the direct selection tool to work properly.

For example, in the pic below there is a pink square behind these two blueish objects. I position the direct selection tool directly in the center of the visible pink area, yet illustrator will pick the blue object to the left or right. If it is picking the one on the right, I can very sensitively move left as i click (still totally within the pink) and eventually the selection skips to the left blue object. It is torture!

a) The incorrectly selected object is always an object that is on top of the object I'm attempting to select. So illustrator is dumbing down my accuracy and assuming I want the top object. Like I said, If I zoom in enough, it picks correctly, so this is an issue of the tool automatically snapping to select the top objects at a certain more distant zoom level. It is both selecting the object (clicking inside the shape) and individual anchors that I can see the selection skipping inaccurately to the adjacent object.

The tool, as far as I know, is not supposed to have this sort of bias for top objects, but it does in really intricate designs. As someone who does detailed work, i need my tools to be able to work on a detailed and accurate level, which often involves selecting objects that are not on top.

b) I've also tested the general accuracy of the mouse by drawing an object-- it draws exactly where is is supposed to at a very high dpi.

c) The options in preferences>selection and anchor display do not help with this problem. Although-- it does seem like a selection tolerance problem. It is like the object selection is much too high. I have tried all the combinations of options I can think of, including 0px tolerance.

d) This problem is exagerated the bigger the monitor you are working on. On a smaller monitor, you are more likely to zoom in to see the point of the cursor accurately, so you will miss the issue. But on a large display it becomes quite obvious. Is illustrator just not designed for newer monitors?

Hopefully there is an option to solve this problem. I need to not have this annoying snapping and the correct object selected. The program is already incredibly expensive and does not do basic accurate selection work. Thanks for any help!

You are mentioning that you have already tried to modify all kinds of snapping (tolerance) options, so I'm afraid I cannot provide any further advice.

However, I think your issue is a perfect example that shows why it would be tremendously beneficial if Illustrator (optionally) had a selection mode where only those objects are being selected that are fully surrounded by the selection marquee. Some other applications can do that by holding down a modifier key.

Introducing this kind of selection mode has been requested for decades, by the way. To no avail so far.

Hi! Just wondering if you've figured out a way to fix this issue? I'm having this same issue on my Mac, yet I've never had this issue on my Windows computer. It's making me insane.
