I have a brand new MacBook pro maxed out - 64gig ram, 600 gigs of available space and still illustrator is trying to tell me the moment I turn on a 3D view that my computer doesn't have enough memory or space to support it.....I literally upgraded my machine by leaps and bounds to avoid this exact issue!!! Why the hell can't illustrator figure this out? I refuse to believe that somehow my machine, which my slower and less adept machine was able to bevel and extrude things, can't do this in a more efficient way.
Does anyone have any information for me?

Anything else running that Illustrator has to share the RAM with?
Just how complex is the artwork? Just a simple rectangle?
Is it only a specific file or generally?

yes, of course there are things running but that's what the newer processor, graphics card, and 64 gigs of ram are for. Even my 16gig of ram MacBook pro could handle having photoshop and illustrator open and doing a 3d shape. One simple 3d effect was too much for illustrator to handle.

They can also login to your system and check things out.

Is this using 3D (Classic) or the new 3D effects?

Hello @wattlendaub,
Sorry for the delayed response and to hear about this experience. I hope the problem is resolved by now. If not, I would request you to share a few more details like:
Also, many users have reported macOS Monterey memory leak issues with other apps. You may read about it here: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/11/01/macos-monterey-memory-leak-user-reports/.
If you are facing a similar issue, then I would suggest you post this to the Apple Support Community.
Looking forward to your response.
Thanks,
Anubhav
