Does Illustrator provide a way to surround a line of text with an invisible background? I thought GIF images could be created to allow a text image to lie over a photograph without dragging along a background that obliterated part of the underlying image, but the GIF images I have created with Illustrator do not do this.
If you choose File > Export > Save for Web (legacy) there will be file format choices in the upper right corner. If you choose GIF, make sure that Transparency is turned on.

Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out. In addition to Barbara's response, I'd request checking out this help article(https://helpx.adobe.com/in/illustrator/how-to/export-assets-web-app-design.html) to know more about Save for Web options. Hope it helps.
Regards,
Ashutosh
