Is there a quick selection tool in Illustrator CS6?

I'm trying to select part of an image but it keeps selected the whole thing. I've tried the magic wand a lasso tool but those aren't working.

And no luck with the Direct Selection Tool (the white arrow bundled with the black one)?

If you mean raster image, Illy just sees a collection of pixels like you and I.

Is that the white arrow beside/underneath the black one? If so, that doesn't work either. The image I'm using is in vector form.

Select the whole thing, (with the black arrow), then choose Object > Clipping Mask > Release...
