Is there a way to make a stroke transparent, including over the stroke of another shape?

As the title says, I am struggling to find a way to have a circle over a rectangle stroke, with the circle’s stroke creating transparency through both shapes.

On the picture I want the white stroke of the circle to be transparent through the rectangle stroke too, I tried using pathfinder but the just came up with the result at the bottom of the image.
