Keeping layers closed

Is there a way to keep unneeded layers collapsed, in addition to locked?

My artwork can exceed 100 layers/sub-layers and over 5000+ custom-made paths.

If I close any give file, regardless of how many layers/paths they may have, more often then not, when I reopen them again, many of the layers may be completely opened with access to irrelevant paths. I have to scroll through the list and manually minimize all of the unneeded layers again and again...

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Which version of Illustrator are you using? I'm using 22.1, and the Layers panel seems to open just as I had it when I last saved the document.

    Hi,

I recommend to use layer groups, like in Photoshop.
You can just create a new layer, then select dozens of layers and move them into this new layer. In terms of structure everything will be the same, but work will be a little bit easier, because if you need to expand or collapse all the sublayers at once now you just can hold Alt/Opt key and expand or collapse parental layer.
