Kerning/Tracking in Illustrator: can't key in

Have a maddening issue with the latest version of Illustartor (2022).

I can't type values into the kerning/tracking/font size/leading fields.

So let's say I have a 17 point font set, and I'd like to take it to 23. I would usually type '23' into the font size field. Now I can select the # that is there now, but typing 3s on my keyboard does nothing. My only option is to click the arrows which is cumbersome and... wrong. Help please?

Works fine for me.

There may be something wrong/corrupt with your installation.

What operating system are you using?

mac BigSur 11.6.2 with latest available Ai.

And infuriatingly, this issue comes and goes with no particular rhyme or reason. It persists about 30% of the time I'm working in Illustrator.

Oh nooo this is true for ALL FIELDS in ai! so let's say I'd like a .35 rule on something — that is now impossible cause I can't type it in and it's not a dropdown value. This has to have a solution !
