Question

Keyboard Shortcuts Assume US keyboard

If someone else has found/fixed this, then I can't find it...

The problem I face is that the Keyboard Shortcut system in Illustrator is interpreting my keyboard layout as a US one when it is actually a UK layout. So (for example) to get Snap-To-Grid I have to press Ctrl+Shift+# for it to work, instead of the Ctrl+Shift+" that is shown in the View menu.

This is all the more silly because the user interface that allows shortcut customisation fully understands that I have a UK keyboard. It is only the actual invocation of a shortcut that makes the mistake of thinking it's a US keyboard.

Does anyone know the fix for this?

- it's very annoying.

Are you on mac or windows?

What iput source do you have set in your keyboard system preference?

In Adobe Cloud What language do you have set?

What do you have set in your keyboard shortcuts

We need to see what you actually have, in our to troubleshoot and be able to help.

I am using Windows 11, the OS system settings are set for UK keyboard, and the hotkeys are Illustrator's standard defaults. The Illustrator I installed was "English International" (since there is no English UK option).

Hi,

b) No, the langauge does not change when launching illustrator

a) Already done - as per third paragraph of original post

Thanks for sharing the info. It seems like there might be a conflict or an issue with the specific key combination on your keyboard. Here are a few suggestions to troubleshoot the problem:

  • On-Screen Keyboard: Open the on-screen keyboard on your computer and check if pressing specific keys registers correctly. This can help identify if there's a hardware or software-related issue.
  • Custom Shortcut: You can check and modify keyboard shortcuts by going to Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts according to your keyboard layout.
  • System Language Settings: Ensure that your system language settings match your keyboard layout. Sometimes, discrepancies between the system language and the keyboard layout can cause issues.

If the issue persists, please provide more details about your operating system and Illustrator version so that we can offer more specific assistance.

Best,
