Language field missing from Character Panel

I hope this isn't a silly question.. 

I am working on a document which has been supplied with the Language set to French.

I need to spell check it in English, but don't seem to be able to change the languge of the dictionary.

I have changed the setting in Settings>Hypenation.
Did language not used to appear as a setting in the character panel?
