I have a document with over 100 layers in it ...which is pretty normal for what we do and Illustrator in CS6 has a big issue with the layer palette .....as you scroll down the palette the layer names disappear ...as you run the mouse over the layers they re-appear and then disappear again ...this issue makes the software useless as I can't see the layers  .....this happens on all the documents I've been working on ....anybody getting the same thing and anybody go any ideas of how to fix this or is it Adobe's issue?

I've had this issue often, especially with converted files (older versions of Illustrator saving as newer versions of Illustrator).

The fix that has always worked for me is to be sure the Layer Panel/Palette option "Paste Remembers Layers" is checked, Select All in the corrupt file, create a new Illustrator document, and Paste into the new document.

Viola!

I know I'm late to the party on this after almost three years. but I have just fixed the issue on my computer.

I'm running CS6 on OS X Yosemite with a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014).

Layers pallets were showing up blank. I tried cleaning font caches, repairing permissions, threw out illustrator preferences, restarted computer after each of the first two. None of these solutions worked. I have too many apps to try uninstalling random apps to see if that helped the problem.

A coworker said that Verdana was the issue and fix at her previous job. She said the make sure Verdana was loaded. I had Verdana loaded already so didn't think that was it, but as I looked further I realized that Verdana was loaded in two different places!:

Hard Drive > System > Library > Fonts

Hard Drive > Library > Fonts

I removed them from the second path, restarted and all was good again. Pallets are back to normal.

I hope this helps anyone perusing this thread for the same issue.

Wow fixed easily! Must be a bug in CS6 and the newer Mac OS.

We use the Verdana font so removal is not possible. Cleaning the font cache did the trick temporarily....however, was a step that is not necessary.

Seems to happen on received customer files when they select a dieline layer to not print.

Double clicking of the layer and selecting print box, magically makes all layers appear!

Thanks!

A bug for sure....Unfortunately Adobe has left us for their Cloud....

I had this problem too. I'm working on a Mac, OS 10.9.4, Adobe Illustrator CS6 16.0.1.

The fix to this bug: I had to select the layer options and turn on the  "Print" option.

When I turn off the print option, the bug comes back.

I have experienced this problem in Illustrator 6 numerous times.
I'm sure that this is a bug but the problem only manifests itself when I open a file that has a layer that has been optioned to not print.

Though I cannot see the layer name or icon, I can select a layer then open the layers options palate. Select -- Options for "xxxxxx".

If the print option is unchecked, check it, hit OK, then all icons and names reappear. This also occurs when I opt for no print on a layer.

This has held to be true in every instance. Don't know why. Good luck.

Install the fonts Verdana and Tahoma. All faces.

Should also be mentioned somewhere in this thread.

Same issue here. Layers disappear when one layer is set to 'template' [or nonprinting, which is a necessary function of 'template']. On the suggestion of a poster in a different forum threat, I re-installed the Verdana family of fonts (regular, italic, bold italic, bold…all in a TrueType TTF format) in the fonts directory of my library (system / library / fonts). Restarted the computer. Problem is solved.

We are having the same issue. Power Mac 2.8 Quad Core running 10.6.8.

It is template layers and below, possibly because of the italic font used? Does anyone know which font should be installed to display the italic layer name properly?

thanks,

Jim

On the first layer with a missing name double click on the thumbnail. In the layer options make sure "print" is checked. This should make all the layers visable again.

Still having other issues with illustrator after seeing this issue.

Well, yes, because by doing that, you are turning off the template layer. That doesn't stop them from disappearing when you make a template layer.

This resolved the missing Option Layer Names for me on Mac 10.6.8 with Illustrator CS 6. Thank you!

Look like you have corrupted fonts.Validate fonts "Tahoma" on Win and "LucidaGrande" on Mac.

LucidaGrande isn't on my system (Mac). I even went back to my install disk and reinstalled the fonts and that wasn't one of them.

I agree that it is probably a font issue, because when you make a layer a template, the layer name in the palette switches to italic and that's what's not showing up (although it also makes the thumbnails and tool icons in the palette disappear).

Anyone know what font that is?

That may be your issue entirely.

Lucida Grande is the primary font the Mac OS uses to draw windows. All Mac OSX versions require that font.

System/Library/Fonts... if it's not there, you've got issues.

We are having the same layer panel problems in Illustrator CS6 on two systems in our office. Both are brand new Macs running OS X 10.7.4. I have tried repairing user permissions, changing Layer Panel options, resizing Layer Panel, etc.

Layer thumbnails and names dissapear. Layer tool icons (new layer, delete layer, etc.) dissappear. Sometimes they reappear when moused over.

Really frustrating. There must be a solution to this.

Dis you read what I wrote in Post #1

Now you know why I also wrote that I have rerpeated this a hundred times before.

all you have to do is read iut then follow up on it and you will solve your problem.

Do you have plugins, have you loaded new fonts, free fonts, have you trashed your preferences, have you conflicting software installed, did you update any software recently have you upgraded non Adobe software lately and have you repaired your permissions.

I say you have conflicting software install in some form or the other it could be a plug in and update or third party software. Do what you have to do and you will not only solve your problem but you will also find the source of the problem.

In the last two months situation where to the user it appeared to be a bug it has turned out to be conflicting software at least 6 times and this will be the seventh time.

You know what you installed or updated we do not know.

I rrun the same system you have and it does not happen here.

Really, Wade, your condescending tone is unnecessary. You should ask yourself if you come to this forum to actually be helpful or to belittle others and feel superior.

But just to humor you...

I have already trashed my preferences, repaired permissions and updated all Adobe software. There has been no new software or fonts installed since installing CS6. The only plug-in used is Extensis Sutcase Fusion 4 Font Auto Activation and I have uninstalled that with no effect on the problem.

We have four systems running all of the same software and os. Two of them have this problem and two of them don't.

Obviously, this is not an isolated case. I'm looking for someone who has had this problem and fixed it or would have a more helpful suggestion.

Thanks.

Try increasing the width of the layers panel

Can't replicate the issue here.

Operating System?

Layer panel options?
