Library Software for AI Documents

New Here ,
Aug 09, 2018 Aug 09, 2018

I'm looking for some sort of library software to manage a huge number of AI files that are currently living on a variety of servers. When multiple users open a file at the same time, corruptions occur and the file has to be completely rebuilt.

The key elements that I'm looking for in the software are:

- The ability to check in and check out Illustrator files.

- Can support a large number of files and a large number of users.

- The files can live in different locations. (Perhaps this is not possible, though?)

- All users can see when a file is checked out and being worked on by someone.

- When a file is checked out by someone, no one else can work on it.

I remember using InDesign and InCopy (or QuarkXPress and Quark CopyDesk) 15+ years ago, but I've never seen this used outside of publishing.

Any thoughts or recommendations? I can also post this in a different community if there's a better one to choose...

Thanks so much!

Shana

I doubt that there would be anything specific to Illustrator for this.
I think your best option would be to search for Document Management Software. Or something along those lines.

Look for something which does what you need and is in the price range you're happy with.

Hi Shana,

Multiple users opening a .ai file would not cause corruption, but saving the file at the same time could, especially if the server software on the back end does not comply with the front end.

Are you saving as and turning off pdf compatible??? This  greatly reduces odds of corruption. Unless you are placing the .ai file in InDesign or after effects you do not need this setting on. Your files will be much smaller and faster also.

Adobe Version Cue & Drive were supposed to do this, but was nto popular so they discontinued. Some people us google drive for this, but I have not tried to be able to comment on how well this works.
