Light effects always have a huge black outline

I would like to use these lighting effects without having those block boxes around it, but the only way I found to remove them, is to have an object under them. Is it possible to just remove those boxes?

It is possible, but that would mean that you rebuild this effect using all of Illustrator's modern functionality. You have to dive into this artwork and try to edit all the details.

 

This is a clipart, right? Clipart companies demand that the collaborators deliver the files in the ancient Illustrator 10 file format, because of "compaitiblity". Don't get me started on that one.
