You can give these custom brushes a try or create your own. Make the brush with a blend, not a gradient, since Brushes do not accept gradients. Also, save your original art as a Static Symbol (not Dynamic Symbols will expand blends).

Frankly, "Dynamic Symbols" has greatly complicated the saving on blends in Symbols. Even if the Symbol is saved as "Static" AI does not play well with Blends in symbols anymore, but that's another topic.

Edit:

The brushes in the set are not directly editable because AI expands blends when saved as Brushes. I recommend creating your own blended artwork to build your own brushes. Here's an example of an offset blend that can be used for some of the strokes. Set the "Colorization" method to "Tints" so you can recolor the stroke to any color.
