Lines start out way too thick when at the smallest setting of 1 point or under

Am I the only one having this issue? In the past when I use the pen tool in adobe Illustrator the line thickness was strait foward and easy to use, but recently I have run into an issue where when I even create a shape or line in the app it shows up being gigantic and when I put it at the smallest of settting 0.25, 1 pt or lower it either disappears or it does not make to much of a difference. Is there somthing I could do about it?
