lines swatch to outline for laser engraving

I tried several posts for creating hatching to outlines for laser engraving.

Somehow I managed to create one photo, but it was a triale nd error one. Now I really can't get another photo to ne a correct one. The first was a really mess of pathfinders, expands and what not.

The photo is a thresholded image, image traced, and I'd like the blacks to be the for the time being the basic lines swatch fill . Everything goes fine until getting the outline view correct, blacks as lines and whites without.

What is the correct procedure, I found so many different things, but nothing seem to work again? First one was of course sheer luck.

I really don't know much of the Illustrator, but would like to know it better, so pls give me the  right way of doing this.

tnx

Thank you very much!

As you say pathfinder is bit wierd. Your method looks easier than messing with expands, and flatten transparency. But as I use a photo, image trace it,  expand, select black and change that to pattern fill, on preview things look ok. Then trying many different combinations of pathfinder and flatten transparency I got quite nice vector representation looking with outline.

Using the basic line patterns are nice, because one line is actually two, and depending the pathfinder mode, the ends are nicely connected.

But now I know bit better how to create hatching images.

The procedure sometimes does not work (for whatever reason - it used to work in older versions), but this is an approach:
