In the above image you can see two yellow rings. Even though its seem like yellow, you say there is a subtle difference between those colors.

This expands a gradient into separate objects and you specify the number of objects. I haven't tested if the number you enter will awlays reliably match the number of objects that are generated.

Illustrator cuts the object into as many pieces as you specify. I have experimented with that file and even when you change the color. it keeps creating 2 rings. I assume it depends on how the color is sampled from the gradient for the coloring of the rings.

But how many stops have these two yellow as gradient. I think the problem is there. We need to know the algorithm. That question goes directly to programmers.
