Linked File Info

New Here ,

I'm trying to access the Linked File Info for several linked images in my Illustrator 2017 file. Is there a reason why the option in the Links panel menu is greyed out for all linked files except jpeg?

Are you sure that they are still linked?

Or did they somehow get embedded?

I've never used that menu item before, but it happens for me, too. Out of the various file types I've placed on the artboard, only JPEGs, TIFFs, and PSDs enable you to view File Info. Nothing was embedded.

Yes the files are definitely linked. I can use Reveal in bridge, Show missing, etc. but Link File Info is greyed out. I tried a psd linked file and that works as in I can see the Link File Info but not for png files.

I link a lot and I have never seen this happen. Can you use any of the options like (show missing, Reveal in Bridge, etc.) Does it only happen to this file (corruption) or is it a problem with multiple files? (corrupted preferences). My go to is reseting my preferences:

1. Exit the application

2. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (macOS) as you start Adobe Software. You may be prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created when you start the application.

Let me know if that solves the problem.

i mean since the TC only mentioned jpeg, so i was wondering what else they were trying.

i see the same thing as you and i don't really understand why illustrator wouldn't be able to view XMP for a placed AI or PDF

Hi Katie,

Yes, everything is updated. I've placed several linked images in my document in png, jpeg, and psd formats. When I try to access the Link File Info through the Links panel menu, it works for the jpeg and psd images but not for the png. For the png, the option is greyed out in the menu. I wanted to know if anyone knew why that might be the case.

Thanks.

Dumb question perhaps, but Do you have multiple images selected when you try this? It only works on 1 image at a time.

LATEST

It is easy to reproduce, for some filetypes it is there, for others it isn't

InDesign can show the XMP for these files.

It may be worth asking for a feature request:
