Live Concentric Shapes

I'm trying to get an effect of having concentrically arranged shapes going inward. I know how I would do this by creating separate shapes, but I'm trying to get something where I can go back and edit the original shape, which updates all the inner shapes to match so I can easily see what shapes work best. Is this even possible?

Using brushes could be one way, but your example may be a bit ambiguous.

Do you know how to set up custom brushes in Illustrator?

I have an idea of how to make brushes, but you think something like this could be accomplished with them? I can't really think of how I would do it.

For a simper example, I'm looking to do something kinda like this, but with any shape. I could do it with offset path, but that makes each circle a separate object, and if I want to manipulate the path, I have to do it all over again.
