logo sizing

I am a new novice to illustrator. I created a logo which includes the outline of an animal, 2 words...some modifications from original font and size, plus the TM. I've grouped them all together. saved them as an SVGZ file. The size is approx 7" wide by 3" high in actual size. When I use a corner anchor point and the shift key to try and re-size it smaller for use on business cards or smaller it seems to look more like a blob than what I started with. Unacceptable. I though SVG files could be scaled.

do I need to retrace the grouped file and save again?

any help would be appreciated. Thanks
