How do I convert old Macromedia Freehand files to Adobe Illustrator? 
I have a client that has a ton of old Macromedia Freehand files that they want converted to Adobe Illustrator

Other than @Monika Gause' s suggestion (frankly, it's worth the price if your files are FH7 and up), if you happen to have an older computer* around that can run it, the last Illustrator that supported Freehand conversion was CS5, for which you can download the Trial installer at https://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs5-5-direct-download-links.html.

This would give you enough time to convert your stash of files. That being said, it could only convert FH7 thru 11 files same as the Tensai plug-in.

If you have older files, they would need to be upconverted first (and Tensai offers that as a billable service), and there are a few people here that can do that (myself included).

Also: It was common back in the day to export Freehand files as EPS to place in layout programs. Those can be opened in Illustrator, although some Freehand effects/objects were converted to less than ideal objects (things like gradations will be broken up into stepped object slices) as was the only way to print some of the effects in days before Postscript 3.

 

* e.g. on Mac, up to High Sierra, so quite old
