Major Bug with Canvas Movement in Illustrator (Beta 28.7) on macOS

Hi Illustrator Community,

I've been using Illustrator for years and recently switched to the Beta version, which initially resolved a long-standing issue I had with the program. The problem was with the canvas movement on touchpad. In the official Illustrator release, the canvas would crash when trying to move it without pressing SPACE and dragging. The Beta version fixed this, and it's been the main reason I preferred using it.

However, after updating to version 28.7 today, the issue has returned. The canvas movement is glitchy again, making it feel like I'm using an old computer. I'm on a macOS M1 2020 with 8GB RAM. This bug is incredibly frustrating and disrupts my workflow.

Could you please look into this and fix it? The Beta version was such a relief, and I'd love to have that smooth experience back.

Thanks!

I can spot the difference (I’ve even downloaded both files to recheck).

But to be honest — it’s not a 'Major Bug'. It is a lag, true. Frustrating, yes. Not major still.

Crashes, on the other hands, are bad 😞 Does it crash silently or offers to send a report in a dilaog? Do you send these?

So many things can factor in... Even though I feel powerless here, a question @m1b asked, stays: does it make a difference when you toggle menu View > View Using GPU?

Maybe you're right; perhaps it's not a major bug. However, this lag occurs on the main AI version too, not just the beta. I remember experiencing this significant lag even before the beta was launched.

When I enabled 'View > View Using GPU' in version 28.6, the issue appeared, and it persists with the new update, whether 'View GPU' is enabled or not.

Maybe I explained it poorly. Here are two clips to help you understand the problem better, one with the old version and one with the new update:

Thanks for the videos. I'm wondering if the video encoding has destroyed the framerate necessary to highlight the issue. I looked at both videos severals times and I'm honestly missing the difference. *Maybe* the second one is a bit more choppy than the first. Is that the effect you notice? Essentially Illustrator running at a lower framerate?

Your original post mentions crashing?

Thank you for replying. I believe you need to download it to see the difference. The frame rates are the same; I used the recording window. If you look closely, the canvas in the older version (video 12.09.09) doesn't crash when moving, and loads faster too when is openning. The issue arises when dragging the windows using the touchpad. The new update brings back the old issue of glitches and crashes per frame.

Hi @Alberto38677853y7sg just wondering, does it make a difference when you toggle menu View > View Using GPU ?
