Why didn't my make with top object filled the shape perfectly?

The problem is if that I am dragging around the mesh to fit it, it will get too distorted not in an aesthetical way.

Is there any other way to fit an existing work in Illustrator to a custom defined shape?

Anything else than envelopes?
