Making brush strokes in Illustrator

Hi, I would like to make some clipart textured brush strokes from scratch and can't find any tutorials for this! I have found lots of pre-made strokes on Google but would like to have a go at making some myself rather than using these or the brushes installed in Illustrator. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? Thanks 🙂
