Making my text curve

I am a lucky novice, in the fact that I am winging it as I go. I learn by experimenting, not watching others, even though sometimes it definitely helps.

I'm trying to make some text curve, but I keep getting an error when I choose the "Type on a Path" tool and try to enter text. The error reads "you must click on a non-compound, non-masking path to create text along a path"

What does this even mean? I'm in a new, blank project.

First, draw the curve that you want to use, then click on that path with the Type on a Path tool.

Or, if you don't mind a little distortion, use the Envelope>Make with Warp…

I now know a second way - this one helped me with the text at the bottom of the circle (didn't want it read upside down) - thanks for the tip!!!

There are vast realms of stuff that you are unlikely to discover just by playing around. Fun to just poke and explore, though.

You can use Type on a Path for text at the bottom of the circle without it being upside-down. It just takes a few adjsutments to the Type on a Path Options
