Minus Front Problem

new to illustrator and following this tutorial :  https://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/how-to-create-a-character-kit-in-adobe-illustrator--cms-25785

I am on step 2 and when I click the minus front button I do not get the crescent moon shape they showed in the tutorial.

Please help
