Modifier keys not working

Community Beginner ,
Aug 28, 2017 Aug 28, 2017

Yesterday, all was well. Using my brand new copy of CC on my brand new Mac running Sierra, I used the key combination OPT, CMD, Space to zoom out and Space CMD to zoom in. I use this sequence a lot!

Quite often that key combination would activate Siri, which is annoying, so I turned Siri off.

With that, the key combination stopped working. I can see the cursor flashing, like it's trying to turn into the zoom icon, but it doesn't.

I turned Siri back on, but the problem persists.

What to do?

There is a conflict in Sierra.

Use Command + (plus) to zoom in and Command - (minus) to zoom out 🙂

hope this helps,

Thanks for your answer but although this works, it's not an optimal solution, since it means I have to let go of the mouse and use my right hand on the keyboard every time I want to zoom in and out. I don't work this way. My right hand holds the mouse and my left is poised over the modifier keys on the left side of the keyboard.

I would hope that somewhere in all the keyboard customizations options there's a way to configure it to allow me to work as I have been for literally decades (since Illustrator88), and as it was working yesterday.

I feel the same way about this as I would if someone suddenly told me I had to eat with an icepick instead of a knife and fork. Doable, but inefficient.

Try and press the Space first, then the other keys.

Another potential conflict are the default keyboard shortcuts to show the Spotlight Search and the Finder Search.

However, the method Monika mentioned should work in any case.

Thanks all for your help!! Monica and Kurt, I'm familiar with the conflict with Spotlight from previous OS's. This time the issue was Siri, which I've now disabled. Master Mo, you have saved me hours of frustration!

I just mentioned the possible conflict with Spotlight because in your initial post you stated that you had already turned off Siri. Therefore I thought it could have been another issue.

Kurt, understood. Thanks!

In the interests of helping others who are sure to have this issue, just deactivating Siri didn't fix it. I still had to go into system preferences and turn off both Siri's keyboard shortcuts and Apple's zoom (in Accessibility). Prior to first turning Siri on, all was well. Once turned on, conflicts arose where both Siri and zoom would launch. Once Siri was again deactivated, the zoom function stopped working. At least it's solvable.
