My documents are only partly visible when zoomed to show full contens

When I create a new document it is placed somewhere southeast of the bottom right corner. I have to zoom and pan to see it and when I click on "zoom to whole document" it flies back to its position souteast of the bottom right corner, so that I only see the top left corner of it. I use AI CC 2017 on a Mac with OS X 10 at least.

No I was not.
I have 8 kinds of Workspaces in AI CC 2017.
They are "Automation", "Essentials", "Layout", etc.
When either of these are selected, you have to reset that particular workspace.
The default seems to be "Essentials".
When I click "Reset Essentials" further down in the same menu, nothing happens.
