my transform controls are missing! help!!!

today when i opened illustrator and tried to create a basic shape and then transform it using the selection tool, there are no controls. here is a screenshot of my screen:

my selection tool is selected but there are no transform controls. is this part of a new illustrator update that i dont know about?!?
