Most of the time it should work ti first apply the roughen effect with a value of 0 and whatever works as the "detail". Following with the zigzag.

Draw a small triangle and create a pattern brush. Apply pattern brush to the Gamma greek letter. Use your scissor tool to strategically cut along the path where the triangles don't meet perfectly. Then expand your triangle brush shapes. Then you can delete partial triangles and then copy whole ones to fill in the gaps.

Maybe a pattern brush? In this case, I used Offset Stroke (with a 0 pt offset) and added the stroke to the path.

This pattern is a default one that is already available in Illustrator. It's in Borders : Geometric.

You can find it under Brush Libraries.
