New to CS4 Illustrator: How do I change the artboard color?

Hi,

I'm new to CS4 Illustrator, and have not been able to find out how to change the artboard color. Does anyone know how to do this?

The artboard has no colour. If you want colour somewhere, draw something.

With nothing selected, click the Document Setup button in the Control bar.  Check the "Simulate Colored Paper" box under the Transparency Section. Then click the white and grey color boxes and set them to the same color. It will give the artboard a color which will not print.

Or...

Draw a rectangle the same size as your artboard. Place it on the bottom most layer and lock it so it doesn't move.

If you want to get Black, Gray & White for artboard color, go to Edit > Preferences > User Interface, and choose the "Brightness" color for the whole window brightness.

Or If you want to use as white artboard background, choose " Canvas color - White ".

Well this kinda works.

Changed the artboard to grey and now the white text has also changed to grey.

No offence but this has to be the single worst thing about Adobe illustrator!!!  it think they could have found a solution by now... how many versions have they created without fixing this little nugget of ridiculousness?

A total and needless waste of time!!!

it's simulating paper colour. unless your white is set to overprint, it's a non-printing area, therefore it will be whatever colour the paper is.

edit: unless your white is a particular spot ink, rather.

What eles did you expect? If you color the paper and you print with a clor with not ink, as 0/0/0/0, nothing msut be changed.

I expect that this is 2015 and Adobe to know this issue is a nuisance.  This is not paper, I know it is representing paper but it is not paper.  Adobe could make "magically color change paper" and it would not hurt anyone, just help.

There is nothing wrong here, only your lack of knowledge.

Start learning and reading the manual. It will help you not to embarrass others.
