not allowed to use tools

so I am fairly now to illustrator and I ran into a problem. I can not use any of my tools except the selection tools. I can move things around but I cant type or use the eyedropper or anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PLease show a screenshot.

What did you do? Create a new file? Open a file? What kind of file did you open?

You can go to Window > layers and see if anything is perhaps locked.

it was a downlode from my professor. an ai file.

So what happens when you drag a selection rectangle around that artwork and go to Edit > Edit colors > Recolor artwork?

In order to type text, you need to take the text tool and drag a rectangle inside that red rectangle and then type your answer.
