Objects text color eyedropper not working Illustrator

Hello,

I've been stuck for a while now with this problem...

Before writting this :

- I am working on a MacBook Pro,

- with a Pro CC licence,

- illustrator has just been reinstalled and is up to date

- all the settings/preferences are on default

1- Create a document (any type is the same)

2- Make 2 blue rectangles

3- Group them

4- Make a red rectangle

5- Select the group of rectangles

6- Use the eyedropper on the red rectangle

Result : The background color square of the interface turns to red, but not the rectangles. They are still blue.

This only happen if the rectangles are grouped in the first place.

Every box is checked in the eyedropper settings.

A similar problem appears with text

1- Create a document (any type is the same)

2- Make a text

4- Make a red rectangle

5- Select the text

6- Use the eyedropper on the red rectangle

Result : The background color square of the interface turns to red, but not the text. It is still black on the document.

I have also noticed that in the colors of the illustrator, selecting only the text (or the blue rectangles in the previous example), we can see the color of the object but also the red, which appears to be behind the object on an invisible layer.

Does someone have an idea of where it could come from ?

I have run out of ideas here...

Thanks a lot by advance,

Gregoire

I'm not able to replicate this issue. There may be a problem with the Illustrator installation. You could try resetting preferences How to set preferences in Illustrator

But if that doesn't work, uninstall/reinstall using the CC Cleaner tool. Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems

Hello,

The only way to solve the problem I found was to unistall everything soft, including Creative Cloud and use CC Cleaner tool.

It took some time but at least it is now working correctly again.

Thanks' for your answers

This has been reported before, see:

CC2018 bug - applying swatches to groups, and eyedropper errors

This thread also has links to a similar problem and a link to the bug report page (that currently is offline).

You are right, the red fill is hidden behind the black fill. When you select the text object, and not the test itself, the fill is applied on a different level from the black, which is on the text. In the Appearance panel (Aspect) you can see that the red is below the Caractères level. Double-click on the Caractères level and it will reveal the black fill which is hiding the red. You may remove the black fill to reveal the red behind (or under) it; you may replace the black fill with red (and remove the red fill at the Type (Texte) level if you wish), or drag the red fill above the Caractères level. If you had selected the text with the type tool before using the eyedropper you would have simply replaced the black with the red. You are right, the red fill is hidden behind the black fill. The same sort of thing is happening with your squares: the red is being applied at the group level behind the blue, and may be fixed by double-clicking the Contenu level in the Aspect panel.

This may be the technically "correct" explanation and behaviour, but I really don't think it's the "expected" behaviour and I would argue that truly intuitive software should respond to the user in the "expected" manner and so this qualifies as a bug with a workaround, not a true solution.  What are the arguments for why manually selecting the characters of text using the type tool is preferable to simply selecting the entire text item with the select tool before applying a fill? Why can't using the select tool apply a fill to the entire text item, with the alternative of using the type tool to select specific characters when you don't want to apply the fill to the whole item? (and the same for grouped objects!) I am almost certain that this always used to be the behaviour in Illustrator and it baffles me why they have changed it for this non-intuitive and incredibly frustrating alternative.  The fact that so many people keep asking the same question demonstrates that this action is not the expected behaviour for many users.
