Now this was an unpleasant surprise; when updating to the lastest (october 2024) release when prompted trash old version and migrate user profiles I suspected all would be well; its not.

I am missing my custom workspace AND short-cut set.

Thanks but NO thanks Adobe!

Is there any way to retrieve these?

If you have Time Machine, then go into a backup that has been made before the update. And then the files are here: https://www.vektorgarten.de/illustrator-settings.html

Which backups cannot be found? The ones you create with the Settings export? They should be exactly where you saved them. It's a packed file. You can add .zip as the file extension and then unpack it. Or you can re-import the package into Illutrator.

Do you have Time Machine running?

In that case: use it.

Could always happen that kbsc files do not work in a new version.

General remark: it's not a good idea to delete the old version. Ever. There might be things that do not work yet (printer drivers, plugins, scripts, etc)

I always saved previous versions for that reason. Last time it worked as expected.

This time things F&^%ed up. Indesign is not flawless either with missing scripts. Total mess up.

Sorry, but this is such a simple software thing: how easy is it to create a folder with all custom items for later use when running an update.

Strangly enough: I don't seem to be anble to retrieve any workspace or shortcuts set from illustrator with Timemachine; seems they are not saved anywhere.

In this forum 95% of us are not staff and doing this in our spare time.

So do you have Time Machine running? Then you can grab your files from it and try and install them.

Also: if you plan to delete your prefs it is always a good idea to make backups first. Anyway, because power outages while installing just happen. Things do go wrong. Edit > My settings > Export is not to hard to use.

Sorry, not meaning to step on anyones toes here. But this is a bit frustrating.

The export user-settings in InDesign is crappy, reported that in the latest realease allready but it is not working as expected.

The supposed back-ups of illustrator-settings seem nowhere to be found.

I have Time-machine running and even a backup of my macbook on an ssd. But I cannot find any files that should be the workspace or shortcut pref. file (with the corresponding name) for illustrator.

Not in library-application support; and also not in the (expected location) Illustrator-presets folder.

Okay, this was a great help, thanks!

Out of all places I looked, I overlooked this location where the workspace and shortcuts are stored:

User>Library>Preferences>Adobe Illustrator XX Settings>en-GB

Nonetheless, how nice and obligate would it be if these settings would be saved to Creative Cloud in any way.

I seem to remember that was actually the case a couple years back. But it was short-lived.

You might want to post a feature request for it: https://illustrator.uservoice.com Probably there even already is one.
