If you're asking about how to display a preview of an AI file in your own application or widget, I'm not sure you'll find much help here. There's nothing in the SDK to help with that I'm afraid, as the SDK only deals with things you can do from within Illustrator.
Presumably AI installs their own preview handlers on the target OS, but I don't know of any way to tap into that.

I preview AI files in my own applications by using the Acrobat PDF libary (not the com object that comes with Acrobat!). Since i'm working C#, i use Datalogics Acrobat .NET library API (.NET wrapper for Acrobat PDF libary). This seems to give the same quality as Bridge CS3's rendering of AI files.
It's possible Bridge uses PDF rendering for AI files. I believe this to be the case.
