Opening emf file shows white background

I have got an *.emf file with vector graphics (produced by some proprietory C++ MFC application) which I want to convert to pdf.

To do so I open it with Illustrator and got a display with white background.

I guess it comes from some objects with white background (as it is interpreted by AI) while in fact this is not the case (Paint application opens and shows the eml file ok as I see it in the C++ application)

The question is how to identify these objects and remove them easily(I'm really new to AI)? Or there is another way to do it?

Is there actually a white background? Go to View > Transparency Grid

Yes, I did it (show Transparency Grid) - a completely white background, I somehow managed to remove the anchor(?) containing it and then got a gray background. Somehow by selecting and deleting some objects I managed to see the image as it exists in the application (without any background) but it is impossible to find within two clicks the needed object to delete!

If you open the layers panel and expand all layers/objects (prior to deleting), can you see the white background object?
