Oval Gradient Stroke

How would I apply a gradient stroke to an oval? With black coming from the inner edge, fading to translucent gray on the outter most edge?

You could do it with a stroke or an effect. You asked for a gradient so Ton responded with the gradient technique.

To do it as an effect, choose Outer Glow.
