Over saving ai. files as the same name makes my files dissapear!

I hope somebody can help! Using CC 2015

On a file I have worked on in illustrator if I open it, make a change and re-save as the same name (overwrite) the files, my ai. file disappears... if I re-save as a new file name the file remains in my folders.. really strange and frustrating when you've just ended up loosing clients work! Can anybody help?

Does the same thing happen when you use a more recent version of Illustrator that is compatible with MacOS High Sierra?

I'm not sure, I don't have access to a newer version of the software unfortunately

Please ask your IT person to upgrade your software, CC2015 was not meant to be used with this newer MacOS.

Sounds strange, how about

File > Save as copy

as a workaround?

Yeah, that works for me and is what I have been doing but frustrating because I seem to be clogging up my files with additional unwanted files which I then have to delete afterwards
