Overlapping paths get cut out in Cricut Design

When I draw with the Brush in illustrator, my image looks normal and fine. But when I upload it to Cricut Design Space, it shows the overlapping sections of the paths as cut out. I tried fixing this by using pathfinder>merge, but that makes it so that Cricut Design cuts out everything inside the shape as one black silhoutte. How do I "merge" the paths so that no overlapping sections show?
