Pasting text not working

When I paste text, it doesn't retain the formatting or positioning. This occurs no matter what type of paste I do (eg paste in place, paste in front, etc). What's more, If I try and paste something else with the text – eg a shape, it only pastes the text (unformatted) and not the shape. See video.
This was happening on Illustrator 2017, so I updated to 2020, and also to MacOS Catalina (I'm on a mid-2014 MacBook Pro). I also trashed my Illustrator preferences. I'm not running any plug-ins. I've tried this is new documents to see if the file was corrupted, and used different fonts just in case there was something wrong with the one I was using, but unfortunately this is still happening.
Any help appreciated!

Hi
This is so weird.
In the new Illustrator (2021), you can turn on this option but not in the old ones.
I highly recommended you delete all the Preferences Folder no just the Prefs File.
Be careful if you have custom Workspaces or Keyboard Shortcuts (make a backup previously).
Best Regards

If you need a copy of the text can you alt/option-drag to make a copy?
If you add to and then place from CC Library will that work?
