Pattern Editing in Illustrator

Very new to illustrator. Made one simple pattern as shown using pattern options. Finding very difficulties filling colour in white portion. Simply dont want background colour in plain layer wanted colour in inverse path of pink colour.

Draw a colored rectangle below the pattern.

Or:

In the appearance panel apply a second fill to the object

I dont want background colour. Simply wanted colour in the white portion (cutted parts).

If you want colour in the 'cutted' parts, isn't this the same as having a background color? When the cutted parts are filled, there's no space left...

Or, do you want to give the artboard a fill colour? In that case it's also best to draw a coloured rectangle behind your object (just like Monika says).
