Running AI 29.1 on macos (Sonoma 14.6.1).
I can take an image and import it into AI without issue (See Original.png)
I can rotate the image (See Rotate.png) or Crop the image (See Crop.png) without issue.
The moment I crop and rotate the same image I get some pretty bad artifacts on the image that persist after exporting the image as a png or as a pdf (See Crop and minor rotate.png and Crop and Major Rotate.png)
Any way to prevent this issue and or how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. I need to be able to crop and rotate the image so skipping one of these steps is not an option.
Best,
Thanks, I can reproduce it now. Seems like Illustrator does not handle resampling as good as Photoshop.
I would use Photoshop for this or in Illustrator, use a clipping mask instead of crop.
Seems to be a known issue:
No fix implemented yet in Illustrator but can be done in photoshop.

Here is a more obvious example of the artifacts on the image. See the rotate square boxes appearing on the image.

Example without artifacts.

Do you keep the resolution and scale the same?

Nope, during the process of cropping and rotating I am not changing the scale of the photo.

I cannot reproduce that. I rotated your image, made a copy on top, cropped it and used difference blending mode to show any differences.

Okay, thank you for trying. I could reproduce it in the following AI file when doing a rotation followed by a crop but not when cropping followed by a rotation. I have been able to get the artifacts when doing both orders before so.

Can not upload a .ai file here..... Here is the .eps file.

Also, for me at least, multiple rounds of cropping/rotation really imp acts the image.

Got it, that is what I just started to do as an alternative. Thank you again very much. It is greatly appreciated.

Good to hear you have a workaround. You may want to report it here where the Illustrator engineers are watching:
