pattern swatches not repeating accurately

Question

I want to layer 2 swatches that I have made the old fashioned way, a rectangle with no outline and no fill. When I tile the blue rectangle swatch in PS on its own the repeat is seamless. When I add another swatch to the AI doc the original no longer tiles seamlessly. I need help. I have been working this way forever and for some reason today it's not working.

That should work, but can you try the Appearance panel with another fill?

I am pretty clueless about how to use the appearance panel.

I have been reading many other threads and saw one that said to double click the swatch. I did that for both swatches and examined the info which was correct then exited. Now the swatches are tiling correctly. I have no idea what happened but I hope it sticks.
