Question

PDF opens rotated in Illustrator

In architecture practice, we are using illustrator, photoshop and CAD programs daily. The biggest problem appears when we opening PDF's in illustrator they come out sideways for some reason...

After using AutoCAD or Microstation programs in sheet mode we either print those drawings or Print PDFs accordingly. Acrobat and Photoshop open those files as the way we set up on CAD (eg. landscape). But for more than a decade Illustrator still opens those files sideways (portrait)! And we manually rotate them and create annoying inaccuracies... work with vectors and save pdfs as landscape. But then we open in Acrobat in order to combine separate pdfs into drawing set - the pdfs saved from illustrator is now in portrait...

Please help

Usually I go to artboard mode and flip artboard to landscape and change size. If I want to print portrait to landscape I use print option for printing in landscape mode. You can print Ai file to pdf with Adobe PDF file.instead of saving them also.

May be this can help

How to set up Illustrator files for printing

Automatically rotate artboards for printing

In Illustrator, all the artboards in a document can automatically rotate to print to the chosen media size. Select the Auto-Rotate check box in the Print dialog box to set auto rotation for Illustrator documents. For a document created in Illustrator, Auto-Rotate is enabled by default.

For example, consider a document with both landscape (width is more than height) and portrait (height is more than width) media size. If you select the media size as portrait in the Print dialog box, then the landscape artboards automatically rotate to portrait media when printing.

Note:

When Auto-Rotate is selected, you cannot change the page orientation.

Thanks, Ares for your response.

The artboard mode flips the artboard, but not vectors within it. I still have to rotate them manually.
Also saving AI file as pdf lets me keep layers, in which case sent to print as PDF will lose all of that...

It is just uncomfortable that what I see in PDF (landscape), I cannot get in AI (opens up as portrait).
