Question

PDF stroke size change when Opened in Illustrator

I have PDF artwork that I need to send to a 3rd party supplier to create a Stamp for me and his system only works with EPS files

When I save the pdf as an EPS and open it in illustrator the stroke thickness changes from 1.4mm to 1.7mm.

When I open the original PDF into illustrator the stroke thickness changes from 1.4mm to 1.2mm

When I place the PDF into illustrator and then Flatten the placed file the stroke change to 1.2mm with Enhance Keylines of and 1.7mm with enhance Keylines turned ON.

Is there a way to make sure the Stroke thickness in the PDF will stay the same when Opened into Illustrator as there are No Options in Acrobat to covert a stroke to outlines and I can't keep going back to my client to get them to make all the Stokes outline in their original artwork before sending me a PDF.

Use in Acrobat Pro > Print Production > Preflight those profiles which will outline fonts and strokes and then you can open it in Illustrator without causing any change in form. (But you loose text editing functionality to text as it is now vector art.)

    Hi Willi

I used a Preflight profile that Flattens and Converts Outlines to Strokes and applied the fix but it does not Outline the Lines, they still remain as they were.

    Thanks anyway.

In which app has the PDF been created?

    You could try the following:

Create a new file in Illustrator.

Place (link, not embed) the PDF.

Select it and then Object > Flatten transparency. Check the option "Outline strokes"

    Hi Monika

file is created from a Proprietery application from my client, I have tried placing the file as a Link and Flattening Transparency with Outline Strokes Checked and it thickens the stroke from 1.4mm in Acrobat to 1.7mm in illustrator.

I am at a loss as to why 2 Adobe application cannot interpolate a file the same, a stroke width should not change when opening into a different application from the same supplier.

I have saved the PDF as an EPS and still the stroke widths change.

Any more suggestions that i could try would be helpful.

    Thanks

That file contains a couple of lines.

Please tell us in detail what exactly happens to those and what exactly is wrong about it.

Nobody here knows your file. Only you know. Please help us understand your problem.

Edit: If you still need help you should unmark this "solved", because only few people will read a solved thread.

    Hi Monika

the file needs to be converted to an EPS file so that my supplier can run the file through his system, when we open the PDF directly into illustrator the lines become thinner then in the PDF, if I create a document in illustrator and then place the pdf into and then Flatten the image with create outlines turned on the lines become thicker than the PDF, if I save the pdf to an EPS the Lines also Thicken.

The Top Line stroke thickness is 1.39mm in Acrobat when I select it with Pitstop selection tool

The Top Line stroke thickness becomes 1.23mm if i open it up directly into illustrator

The Top Line stroke becomes 1.74mm thick when I Place the PDF and Flatten with Create outline on and also when I save as an EPS.

This is happening with all the lines in the file, they are all reduced or increase in thickness, wondering how I can keep them from changing in size when creating an EPS so I can send them to my supplier as the correct size.

I have spoken to my client about getting them to change the strokes to Outlines before supplying the files to me but as they 100's of different jobs and files they are not willing to do this, my supplier is using and old system to run his stamping equipment and cannot upgrade his software to accept a PDF, and as far as I can see there is no option in Acrobat to convert Strokes to Outlines.

Need help in resolving this as this new Client might end up going back to their old supplier if we can't fix this issue soon.

Looking for any new advice that might help with this issue.
