PDF templates not dimming

Mac OS X Big Sur

Latest version of InDesign and Illustrator

I create a PDF from an InDesign page containing an image for use as a template in Illustrator. Normally this works perfectly well, and the PDF is dimmed to the Dim Images default setting, however, today it's started playing up and giving the following message:

PDF problem.pngexpand image

On hitting OK, whilst the image dims, the text remains undimmed. I thought it might be to do with the hard drive being overfull, so freed up some space. All the relevant fonts are activated so far as I can tell, because, whilst the relevant Adobe Fonts show in Find/Replace Fonts, the Activate column is unchecked (not sure whether this is normal or not). Also when I redo the PDF in InDesign, there's no prompt to update the link in Illustrator.

Struggling here so any help would be most welcome.

Illustrator isn't a general PDF editor: in this case it just can't do what you want. Many people get trapped by the assumption that any PDF will just work in Illustrator. Adobe set up expectations they can't deliver.

Hi, thanks fro getting back.

I'm not using it to edit and, up until today, placing PDF's created in InDesign has always worked fine without problems. Oh and Show Hidden Characters has hash marks at the end of each line so there's definitely something going on here. It has to be a font problem – do you know whether the Activate column is normally checked in Find/Replace Fonts?

Also just had this message when I tried to delete the placed PDF template:

Are you placing it Linked? You can also try to rasterize it.

Thanks Ton. Yes it's linked but I have now placed a rasterised file, a PNG, and it's fine. It's still frustrates me that, up until this morning, I always successfully placed PDF's without problems. Perhaps it's to do with OS X memory but I still think it's a font issue.

Thanks though guys.
