PDF Version Question

Hello All,
I have a question about PDF versions. I have a bunch of PDFs that are saved as version 1.3. I realize that's an ancient version but thats not my call haha. When I open them and make any changes and hit save as....the versioning defaults/stays at 1.3 (which is great, that is what I want and what I would think Illustrator would do). However, I opened a PDF that was saved as a 1.6 and made some changes, hit save as, and it defaults to version 1.4 for some reason. As I said earlier, it would make sense to me that whatever version the PDF was originally created at, that's what Illustrator would default to when you hit save as. I'm just trying to figure out how Illustrator decides what version to save the PDF as when you hit save as.

Hi adamh,
Could you please confirm what PDF preset you are saving it to?
If you are using press quality and high quality, it automatically changes that to PDF 1.4 version.
However you can change it to whichever version you want.

Hi Srishti,
I am using the Illustrator Default preset. I realize you can manually change the PDF versioning but sometimes I have many files to edit and don't want to have to worry about manually changing the PDF version. As I said before, I would think if you open a PDF that was created as a certain version, Illustrator would retain that version when you save it again. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I'm trying to figure out what the reasoning is.
