Question

Pen Tool lag when pressing Shift key to constrain on Illustrator

Hello! I've been having issues using the pen tool in illustrator when I hold down shift to constrain a line to a straight or 45 degree angle. The issue is that the line jitters violently and jumps around when I place it, lagging considerably.

I would point fingers at my system, but I own a Surface Book 2 with a gtx 1060, so I'm not sure if processing capability is the culprit. However, I've found that disabling the gpu performance option gets rid of this jitter, but it's a workaround for now. I've also tried updating gpu drivers, but this didn't solve the problem as well. Has anyone else faced this problem before?

Hi Maxwell,

Thanks for reaching out. I understand you are having jittering issues with the pen tool in Illustrator while pressing the Shift key to constrain. As you have mentioned that issue gets resolved by disabling the GPU performance in Illustrator preferences, my first suggestion would be to update GPU drivers from the manufacturer's website. For example, if you are using NVidia GPU then install the drivers from Download Drivers | NVIDIA (Please do not use CDs/DVDs).

If that doesn't help, please share the following information:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Where the files are saved (Network Drive/ System HDD/ Shared Folder on System /External HDD)
  • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, could you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.
  • Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates or web extensions installed recently.

Regards,

Srishti
