Question

Phantom artifact in mesh object and kinked lines

What is this??

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe, settings completely reset, built entirely new object, copied this to a new file, and have tried placing the mesh in different locations. Why does it do this?

First it was the kinks in the mesh lines that I could not sort out and just dealt with, then not being able to change an anchor from a corner to smooth, now I'm getting color gradient objects floating. This is not only in this file.

What am I doing wrong with the mesh tool? I've done 15 objects so far and I keep discovering new maddening issue not stated in the forums.

Kinked line and artifact. Kinked line is not impacting the artifact, only moving the center of the mesh point.

I had this exact same issue of kinks in the gradient mesh with no anchor points causing them. I think it was carried over from something in the object I was applying the gradient too. It was fine when I just drew a fresh shape to apply the gradient mesh too.

If you select the add or remove anchor points tool (the pen icon with a plus or minus), you will see that there are more additional points in your mesh than can be selected with standard mesh editing tools. Remove unnecessary points and the problem area on the object will disappear.
With the same tool (add anchor point tool) you can add an additional point to the cell edge without creating additional cells.
but this point will only serve for additional transformation of the cell; it cannot be filled with color.

Just click on them with the remove anchor point tool and they will get deleted.

I do not understand your issue.

Have you just started using the mesh tool and need help with it?

Or does Illustrator change perfect meshes on its own? If so, maybe reboot the system and try again?

I started using it over the last few months. Every so often I get this "kinked" line. I'm not able to deduce why it is there and how to manipulate it. The other issue is the odd artifacts, in the picture it is the dark, crisp spots where I'm expecting a gradient to be. This is probably my lack of knowledge because I have done the restart, the uninstall/reinstall, etc.

Meshes have to be made in a very precise way. If the mesh lines overlap, then you get all kinds of unwanted results. Did you already read the documentation about meshes and how they work?
